802.11a - Definition
802.11a is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) protocol for wireless networks. that specifies a maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbps and an operating frequency of 5 GHz. This higher frequency compared to 802.11b 2.4 GHz shortens the range of 802.11a networks. The higher frequency also means 802.11a signals have more difficulty penetrating walls and other obstructions.
